Dr. Sonja Stilp is a spine and sports medicine specialist who is part of the Boulder Orthopedics practice. After completing her fellowship training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Stilp joined an orthopedic practice in Aspen, Colorado. She jumped at the chance to come to Boulder because of her love of the Boulder community and interests in fitness training, such as Pilates and yoga. Dr. Stilp comes from a background of Category 1 bicycle racing, winning numerous national and international events. She is a strong advocate of using exercise to combat athletic and spine injuries. In addition, she has expertise in interventional spinal injections and sophisticated pain management. Sonja Stilp, M.D. is a native of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where her father practices as an orthopedic surgeon. She completed her undergraduate training at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. While an undergraduate, she moved up the ranks of the cycling community, culminating as a participant in the United States Olympic Training Site in Colorado Springs. She continued racing and her education at Duke University in her original career focus, engineering. After receiving her master of science degree in engineering at Duke, she decided to go to medical school. After receiving her medical degree at American University, she completed an internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at Loyola University, Chicago. Her fellowship training at the University of Colorado focused on the treatment of low back and neck injuries, sports medicine, and interventional pain management. Dr. Stilp is currently board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (physiatry) and Pain Medicine. She is an active member of the Performing Arts Medicine Society, where she presented research on Pilates-based rehabilitation. Dr. Stilp’s philosophy of care is to treat the whole person. She believes in outlining a course of care that is beyond just medication and incorporates alternative or emerging care. She is excited to welcome new members into her practice.
