At Boulder Community Hospital, we have two distinct types of physicians on staff— obstetricians and nurse midwives. The training of each specialty is different, so it's important to carefully consider how each choice meshes with your needs. The Choice Is Yours Obstetricians specialize in the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the recuperative period following delivery (postpartum). They can also treat infertility and provide medical and surgical treatment for problems with a woman's reproductive organs. Nurse Midwives are nurses with advanced training in midwifery that allows them to provide a range of clinical services for expectant mothers. They care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and continue care through postpartum. They work collaboratively with obstetricians, who are available for consultation and referral if necessary. Obstetricians and Family physicians can earn board certification, which means they have completed specialized training after medical school and passed a comprehensive examination in their specialty.
